The report on New Ways of Working was published on 25th April 2007 and is available here. You can also read all the background documentation supporting the report.
The sub group was established following the joint discussion Paper and the extensive responses received.
We have assembled the material under the headings:
Greg Slay and Peter Gilbert argue the case for a spiritual dimension to the provision of mental health services, and suggest there is a role to be played by organised religion.
(As published in 'Professional Social Work', February 2007, pages 16-17).

This is the second bulletin, updating you on the campaign's development.
The NWW group is preparing its report for February. Its work has four strands- leadership, social work research, career and educational pathways, and social work identity.
Leadership:
CSIP Eastern region are carrying out a survey. The replies have come from a good geographical spread to include County Councils, Unitary Authorities; and Borough Councils. Local examples of good leadership could be used as part of the cross cutting theme on Leadership in the wider NWW report in March 2007
The Social Care Forum drawing together leaders from social care bodies involved in mental health is meeting on 18th January 2007.
The Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE) is holding a Symposium on Leadership on Monday 12th March 2007. Some 50 people will be invited to include the Care Services Improvement Partnership (CSIP) Social Care Leads as well as 2 people from a Mental Health Trust in each CSIP Development Centre region. The themes for the Symposium include Social Care Leadership; S31 Mental Health Act arrangements; ASW/Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) roles; and the results of the CSIP Eastern Leadership Survey – see below.
Social work research:
SCIE are also undertaking a Research Briefing on the evidence-base of mental health social work that will result in a publication, hopefully for March 2007. The briefing will contain all the appropriate references and a summary across the full age range of mental health including forensic services. The meeting was not sure.
The group are writing to the NHS Research Director to ensure that social care is fully reflected in the department’s new research strategy.
Social Work identity
A draft will be considered at the next meeting. GSCC is undertaking work on the role and tasks of a social worker following the Options for Excellence report.
Career Framework for Social Care
Any career framework for social care has to be integrated with the work being developed by Skills for Care. The meeting had a presentation on this work. The aim of drawing up a Career Framework is to provide a flexible Framework where careers did not necessarily have to follow a linear path; one that reflects NWW and New Roles; and allows for entries at different levels refecting the wide background and jobs those coming into social care had attained. It can be used by staff; HR managers; and employers who want to see a link to qualifications. The intention is that will aid recruitment and retention.
Mental Health Services - Workforce Design and Development
Report on the NIMHE National Workforce Planning Pilot Programme (WPPP) Best Practice Report
This report sets out the background to the WPPP; explains the process used; provides examples of good practice and details outcomes and lessons learned from the programme. It is deisgned to encourage mental health and social care providers from within both the statutory and non-statutory sectors to move towards developing integrated work plans.
CSIP/SEDC can support organisations by:
Disseminating the results and key learning from the WPPP more widely across the South East
Providing advice and support with initiatives designed to introduce new roles into the mental health workforce
Supporting the introduction of new ways of working for professional staff
Identifying and sharing good practice, documentation and process
Facilitating problem solving across the Region
