The Personalisation study day was lively vibrant stimulating and set everybody thinking. Once you strip away the ugliness of the language the concept has exciting potential to transform the way in which the whole mental health system operates. Watch out for the study day papers in the autumn but in the meantime, Raza gives a flavour of the event.
It was nice to be able to engage in some positive thinking at the study day. By contrast the picture of inpatient care in the recent Health Care Commission report showed how far we have to go to achieve good quality safe and secure inpatient wards. This means secure in both senses -for the patients living there free from the threat of assault and for the community when patients are a risk to themselves and others.
Thanks for a marvellous response to the request for examples of user-led research. The work which SPN is doing with Shaping our Lives has identified 49 examples.
The SPN AGM heard about Moving People. Raza who also works as a Coordinator for Open Up provides an update on how things are going as the campaign. In case you boggle at £18m over 4 years, Steve Shrubb of the Mental Health Network has a neat factoid- it is less than Marks and Spencer and John Lewis together spent on Christmas advertising last year!
And finally SPN’s tortuous progress to charitable status requires a minor amendment to the Governing Instrument. That in turn requires a special general meeting but we still hope to reach the winning post of registration soon after that!!
The Social Care Institute for Excellence have two new publications on their website.
Knowledge Review 21 - Supporting People in Accessing Meaningful Work: Recovery Approaches in Community Based Adult Mental Health Services and
Research Briefing 26 - Mental Health and Social Work.
These will also be included on our soon to be updated Resources Section.
