Second Study Day on Personalisation

SPN is pleased to announce a second event looking at personalisation in mental health on 8 December. The study day is sponsored by Pavilion who will also be responsible for the running of the study day with support from SPN, and is entitled Steps on the journey – Taking the mental health personalisation agenda forward, and comes exactly quarter of a year after the immensely successful first personalisation study day in Northampton last July.
“There have been a lot of relevant developments recently, and Steps on the journey will be a chance to take stock and debate some of the emerging issues as well as showcase the new learning” said SPN Joint Project Co-ordinator Raza Griffiths, who led on putting the programme together for both study days.

Implications of the Darzi Review

High on the list will be some of the implications of the Darzi Review High Quality Care for all which promises a national pilot programme for those with long term conditions to explore the impact of personal health budgets (which link health and social care resources) in delivering greater chocie and control to service users. In response to a written letter form SPN Director Terry Bamford Lord Darzi promised that mental health service users would also be included in these pilots – essential if  mental health service users are not sidelined in the future development of mental health under the personalisation banner.

In Addition

In addition, there are the blueprints, such as Future Vision  being discussed to come up with a successor to the NSF following its 10 year life. These offer potential to shape services and support in a way that really does alter the relationship of service providers to service users from ‘givers of gifts’ to enablers. In terms of the new learning, there will be the Department of Health’s IBSEN pilot sites evaluation looking at individual budgets within social care, which keynote speaker Caroline Glendinning of York University will be able to share after a prolonged gestation due to Department of Health embargo.

Within the health arena, Rita Brewis of In Control will take a preliminary look at  extending self directed support into the NHS. But the study day will also take critical perspectives outside of the work of these key initiatives. Other keynote speakers will include Peter Beresford, who will also report on the findings of the National Commission on Personalisation on which he is a commissioner, and Sarah Carr who will talk about some of the issues as highlighted in the SCIE Rough Guide on Personalisation. The importance of ensuring that marginalised groups are included at every stage of the process will be picked up by Shahana Ramsden, Deputy Director at DRE. Finally, the range of workshops will help ensure that delegates can develop 360 degree perspectives on personalisation by looking at a wide range of perspectives including the value of microsocial enterprises outside mainstream agencies, the need to involve communities in developing solutions rather than just focusing on individual consumers of services, recovery outcomes and commissioning, a workshop picking up on equality and diversity issues and also a space in which all stakeholders can share their knowledge insights and experiences around personalisation.
