December 2008 Newsletter

This time of year can be joyful reuniting families and loved ones. But for many especially those living alone it can be a difficult period with many of the usual activities and recreational facilities closed. Most of us will be able to relax with a time away from everyday pressures but don’t forget to make a phone call or visit someone you know who is on their own. It can make a real difference.

SPN Holiday Dates

SPN staff will be on holiday as the office building is closed. We close from December 24th reopening on Monday January 5th.

SPN Year

It’s been quite a year for SPN:

• Charitable  status achieved
• Securing funding from Department of Children Schools and Families to run the Parental Mental Health and Child Welfare Network
• A new strengthened Executive Committee
• Getting to stage 2 of the tortuous process for section 64 funding from Department of Health ( fingers crossed for a positive outcome)
• Taking a leading role in pushing forward the debate on personalisation
• Partnerships with Changing Minds, Delivering Race Equality Programme, Social Care Institute for Excellence, Council for Ethnic Minority Voluntary Organisations

And in the wider world of mental health we have seen :
• The Individual Budget pilots research findings
• A revised Care Programme Approach
• A New Vision for Mental Health

SPN Priorities

In the year ahead priorities for SPN will be putting the organisation on a sound financial footing and strengthening our regional activities.

Just a couple of short items for your attention:

CBT- Department of Health’s plan for CBT. Can anyone recommend any service user/survivor research or accounts of treatment by CBT? Any analysis of the evidence base for CBT would be welcome, particularly those offering diverse perspectives on the treatment. Response please to Sarah.Carr@scie.org.uk

And a request from Shetal Patel for experience of family therapy among South Asian families.

And finally...

And finally as they say on News at Ten very best wishes for the Christmas break and for a happy and successful 2009

Terry, Vicky, Raza and Jean
