SPN Easter Newsletter 2009

SPN is changing. April 1st sees SPN in new office acccommodation on the second floor of Goldings House with a new address, new telephone number and in due time a new email address (although that probably won't happen until the summer).

We have our first corporate members

*Dorset Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust

*Swindon Borough Council

*Lincolnshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust

*Blackburn with Darwen Borough Council

*Hertfordshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust

The Trustee board is now up to six and Terry Bamford retired as Director on 31st March and became a Trustee on 1st April. Seamless transitions are the order of the day.

Office Move

The office move came about because of staffing growth at SCIE and staffing reduction at the General Social Care Council due to staff migration to Rugby. Please bear with us during the disruption which accompanies any move but we hope to be back to normal shortly. Our new telephone number will be 020 7234 9857, our email stays the same for the time being.

SPN Trustees

SPN's Trustees are Alleyn Wilson, chair of the Trustees, Rowena Harding (Secretary), Peter Cohen (Treasurer), Steve Cook, Andy Nash and Terry Bamford. Bios of Alleyn, Rowena and Terry are on the website already and those of Steve, Andy and Peter will follow shortly. The Trustees combine experience of social work, marketing, fundraising and management - all relevant skills.

Financial Position

Like many other charities, SPN's financial position is insecure. We have lost the grant received from Care Services Improvement Partnership (80% of our income only three years ago) and have to pay our way through a range of income generation activities. We will continue with our successful study days and are planning a series of workshops on personalisation for the government office for London.

Personalisation

Personalisation continues as a key theme for us and we are exploring research possiblities with other partners.

Prejudice and Discrimination in Mental Health Services

Recent publicity about the degree of prejudice and discrimination in mental health services are deeply worrying. The Health Care Commission has demonstrated that ageism is rampant in mental health care and showed older people were often unable to access the full range of services, including: out of hours services; crisis services; psychological therapies; drug and alcohol misuse services.

The BMC Psychiatry journal has just published some revealing research on ‘The response of mental health professionals to clients seeking help to change or redirect same-sex sexual orientation’.

Call for Research Participants

Laura McGrath is a PhD student at London South Bank University. She is looking for participants to take part in two pieces of research.
