What's been happening at SPN

Welcome to the Autumn edition of the SPN’s newsletter.

A number of things have happened since our last communication. One key bit of news is that we have recruited an Interim Executive Officer. There is much need for the trustees and executive group to look at strategy and direction for the network. Whilst all this strategy is being formulated there is a need to ensure that all our current commitments are being carried out accordingly. There is also a need to establish a framework for our very fluid way of working, as well as ensuring that our day to day activities are being carried out accordingly. We advertised the role on the CharityJob website and got an awesome response.

Tayo Richards made the cut and for the next 3 months her focus will be to act as a lynchpin for the network—ensuring that all our tactical day to day activities are in line with the network’s values, objectives and targets for the rest of the financial year. SPN Joint Project Co-ordinator Vicky Nicholls is also back after an extended absence due to sickness. Vicky’s counterpart, Raza Griffiths, is glad to be working in a team that is up to strength again and SPN’s work continues apace on a range of fronts.

The links below will take you to the different highlights for this month.

Hopefully see you at the AGM!

Best wishes,

SPN Central Team

Tayo Richards, SPN Executive Officer

Vicky Nicholls, SPN Joint Project Co-ordinator

Raza Griffiths, SPN Joint Project Co-ordinator

SPN AGM

Wednesday 9 September is the SPN Annual General Meeting in London. This will be held at The Resource Centre. At the AGM, we will also look at the progress we have made since our last AGM in securing charitable status and winning the City Parochial Foundation funding bid to work with the voluntary and community sectors in London to campaign round a range of mental health issues. We will also overview our extremely successful programme of work around personalisation including the London personalisation workshops.

We will have Executive Committee nominations. So far, we have received eight nominations which you can read about here. Please be aware though that to actually vote as an SPN member, you need to be present at the AGM itself, so do come and get your voice heard.

The AGM will also be enlivened by a panel debate on personalisation in mental health. Panellists will include Claire Helman, Director of New Initiatives, Together, Ruth Allen, Director of Social Work, South West London and St George's Mental Health Trust, Peter Ferns, Independent Consultant and SPN Executive Committee member and Kevin Lewis, Personalisation Lead and National Mental Health development Unit.

The meeting will finish at 4pm, with a chance to talk to the SPN Executive Committee members over drinks.

Personalisation Study Day - 2nd December 2009

SPN in conjunction with Pavilion are holding a study day in London on 2 December, looking at the potential cross-over of personalisation and recovery in mental health. The day examines if, and how, personalised choices can facilitate the recovery journey and what needs to change both systemically and culturally to ensure that they do. The study day will look at the theory and evidence base to date, and also some on the ground examples of innovative personalised services and support and their impact on the lives of service users and carers. The event is of relevance to service users, carers, statutory and third sector providers, commissioners and educators and all people with an interest in exploring personalisation in mental health from a recovery perspective.

External Personalisation Event

Still on the topic of Personalisation. Raza Griffiths, SPN Joint Project Co-ordinator will be a plenary speaker at the Pavilion conference

"Personalisation - New Possibilities”.

Social work has a strong tradition of utilising systemic approaches and this conference will provide ideas and examples of the ways in which these approaches have permeated mental health services. Social care is now the responsibility of all workers and personalisation demands expertise in negotiating outside the mental health system.

Who should attend?

Practitioners in mental health services -statutory and independent sector, housing and community services, mangers in mental health services

and directors of social care or equivalents responsible for mental health.

We look forward to hopefully meeting you at the AGM.
