Jean's Story

I am a SPN member who has written a memoir entitled 'The Dark Threads' by Jean Davison, published by Accent Press. It is about my experiences as a young person in the sixties and seventies when psychiatric drugs, electric shock treatment and abuse turned me into a zombie. Balancing quotes from my case notes, which reveal a (seemingly wrong) diagnosis of chronic schizophrenia, with my own account, my memoir raises disturbing questions which are still relevant today. I was a casualty of a rigid application of the medical model of biological psychiatry; social factors were ignored.

After a five-year-long nightmare in the mental health system, I did manage to withdraw (against medical advice) from all psychiatric drugs and break free. I'm now happily married, hold a first-class degree, and work for Mind.

My book can be purchased from all good bookshops, or online at:

Amazon or at Accent Press.
