Whole People in Whole Systems and how to get there

The first SPN study day for 2004 provided the opportunity to explore how to incorporate social perspectives into the reality of planning, commissioning, delivering, and supporting staff who are working in mental health services. It also featured the opportunity to meet, network and become involved with other mental health projects such as Mental Health in Higher Education and review the activities of the SPN regions.

The day was aimed at those who are aware of the need to ensure social perspectives are considered in every aspect of mental health service delivery and was well attended by practitioners, service users and carers, researchers and academics from all of SPN's nine regions.

The day was also an opportunity to elect SPN's Executive Committee members for the year, with all existing members standing to re-elect and some new members, details which will appear on the site shortly.

About the speaker:
Maria Duggan: An independent health policy analyst with a particular interest in mental health. A social worker by background, Maria has been a senior manager in mental health services, an academic and policy adviser. (Maria is pictured above with Graham Woodham, SPN Exec member and Study Day Chair). Maria'spresentation can be downloaded here.

About the projects:
mhhe: A one-year project funded by the Learning and Teaching Support Network. A central point of contact for those involved in teaching and learning about mental health to share questions and dilemmas, identify solutions and ways forward.

Carers and Confidentiality Project: collaborative project between Rethink and the Institute of Psychiatry aims to identify models of good information sharing practices between carers and professionals in mental health.  The research involves carers, service users and professionals.

Parental Mental Health and Child Welfare Network: Organised by the Social Care Institute for Excellence, a practice network for those working with parents with mental illness and their children from social care and health agencies. More information on this new group will be posted on the SPN website later this month.

Workshop One

What do you want from the Social Perspectives Network?

Mixed groups of approximately 12 people compiled lists of what they wanted from an organisation like SPN. Comments will help guide the priority of SPN's workplan.

Notes from the workshop can be downloaded and a summary will be available in April 2004.

Workshop Two

The same groups then met to discuss what each of us as individuals can do to include a social perspective in our involvement with mental health services? Notes from the workshops are available here and later in the year, SPN will be developing some of the examples as an aide to those involved in mental health services.
