This study day, following on from SPN's response to "Delivering Race Equality", aimed to get everyone thinking creatively about the future shape of mental health services for black and minority ethnic people. We know what the problems are but what are some useful ways forward? What kind of improvements would you like to see? The event was open to all who are committed to working together constructively on BME mental health and information from the event will be posted on this section of the site.
The study day ended with delegates writing their dreams for mental health services for black and ethnic groups on a card, and tying that card to a balloon. All the balloons were released together, allowing delegates to release their dreams in the process.
Some of the dreams included:
“Eagles Soar!”
“My dream is that mental health services will become culturally sensitive”
“To be treated with respect and dignity”
“People with mental health problems are creative and compassionate. Value them!”
“Opening eyes and expanding minds”.
“That people would care about me”.
“Altered states are gifts from the gods, a window of opportunity to be visionary. Let us see these states as positive and enriching all our lives”.
“Humane, supportive, caring and mutual trust”.
